During the morning of 16th December 2011, I watched the demolition of Bairro do Aleixo's tower no.5. This neighborhood was built to give shelter to poor families of Porto's historical center after the end of the dictatorship back in 1974. Soon its bad urban planning started to cause problems and the neighborhood became a dangerous place known as a drug market. This demolition is supposed to be a good thing, because the living conditions there were already far behind decent.
But there is a political problem, as the neighborhood is situated in a noble part of the city, near to the river and the sea, with a great landscape in front of it. And as the Tower 5 is being demolished there's no information about a new social project, just a glimpse of a great business for the City Hall.
